National Volunteer Legal and Gender Advisor

Role Overview:

The main purpose of this placement is to support National Women Commission’s (NWC) effort to provide support on Gender Based Violence Information Management System and support legal department of NWC to deliver effective and efficient support to survivor of violence. In addition the volunteer will help to formulate effective response mechanism and gender friendly policies to prevent and prosecute of violence against women and girls cases. Furthermore he/she will encourage NWC to advocate and ensure women’s active and meaningful participation in development interventions across all line ministries.
Skills, qualifications and experience

Essential:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor degree in Law, Gender, Development, International Relations, Public Policy/Administration or related field
  • At least one/two year of experience in law firm in Nepal, with a preference for some experience in Gender and women’s right issue
  • Data analysis experience including well command of Excel
  • Ability to deliver training on the Human Rights and International instrument on women human rights
  • Experience in training of trainers on Gender and women right’s issues
  • Trained knowledge and international experience in violence against women and girls issues
  • All applicants must possess strong written and spoken English language skills
  • Willingness to work diverse group of staff, partners and donors

Desirable:

  • Experience working with government entities
  • Management training/experience
  • Experience working in resource limited environment
  • Has good communication skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to effectively and efficiently perform multiple tasks and balance competing priorities often within a limited timeframe
  • Ability to travel, usually not more than one weeks continuously for occasional project assignments to provide technical assistance and capacity building/training for project staff and activities

Allowance and Accommodation:

All volunteers have an allowance paid in local currency. The allowance meets reasonable living expenses in country, but will not be enough to send money home. VSO works with some of the poorest communities in the world which means accommodation varies and will be basic.

National Volunteer Social Inclusion & Accountability Advisor

Role Overview:

The main purpose of this placement is to support adopt and contextualize Social inclusion and Gender Manual developed by Global team to ensure SIG perspective VSO Nepal program and approaches. The volunteer have to support to develop Social Accountability framework, guidelines and training materials and build the capacity of VSO partner and staff on SA. Besides, the Volunteer will be responsible to develop SIG and SA responsive monitoring mechanism and system in place

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:

  • Bachelor degree in Social Science, Development studies, Gender, Women Studies or relevant subject
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in the field of Gender & Social Inclusion and Social Accountability Skills and knowledge
  • Ability to design monitoring mechanism from SIG and SA perspective.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, facilitation, communication, and networking.
  • Ability to train government and non-government staff to design and implement social inclusion and gender strategies and action plans.
  • Excellent English and Nepali language and good in documentation
  • In-depth knowledge on current social inclusion and gender policy and inequity issues at policy and program levels in Nepal.
  • Good experience assessing individual capacity and conducting training for diverse target groups.
  • Cross cultural awareness and ability to work amongst a diverse group of staff, volunteer and partners
  • Excellent cooperating skill and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Team work – Able to work effectively with other team member within the organization.

National Volunteer DRR & Resilience Advisor

Role Overview:

National Volunteer- Resilience / Disaster Risk Reduction will contribute to the Rural / Urban Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) survey, analysis, documentation/ knowledge management, coordination, reporting, liaison and network. The National Volunteer DRR will work closely with partners and ensure meeting all compliances of the project. S/he is also responsible for coordination, networking, and liaison with partners, government, and other stakeholders. S/he will support the target municipality during Vulnerability Capacity Assessment (VCA), Municipality Disaster Risk Management Plan (MDRMP) and Municipal Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan (MEPRP) formulation process.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

Professional skills and qualifications needed in the position

  • Graduate degree in DRR or relevant subject with 2-3 years of relevant work experience in design and implementation of disaster risk reduction or other related areas in RR and Rural/Urban context.
  • Practical experience and knowledge on global and national DRR related policies and practices, core humanitarian standard, rights based approach, gender and social inclusion
  • Excellent communication skills in both English and Nepali
  • Excellent coordination, networking and facilitation skills
  • Excellent in Program Cycle Management
  • Experience of working with the private sector is extremely important
  • Personal qualifications needed in the position
  • Committed to rights based and gender sensitive work, pro-poor, committed and strong civil society organizations and social mobilization.
  • Able, willing and committed to work with people of different backgrounds
  • Contribute constructively to a working environment based on mutual respect, trust and commitment
  • Able to cope with stress and work under difficult circumstances
  • If s/he is to work with the private sector, s/he needs to be a dynamic and strategic networker

Commitments needed:
The volunteer agrees with the basic values, vision and mission of VSO and agrees to adhere to the policies of VSO annexed to the VSO South Asia Staff manual provided by the organization. The National Volunteer DRR will be based in Kathmandu with frequent visit to the field locations and will respect the workplace policies and norms of VSO and partners.
