Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Essential)

  • Experience in developing and implementing knowledge management, advocacy and communication strategies, including developing annual work plans and budgets for related activities
  • Experience in collection, documentation and dissemination of information
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and good facilitation skills
  • Skills in liaising with partners including government officials, high-level dignitaries, representatives of NGOs, civil society representatives, academics and researchers
  • Advocacy skills for message development and lobbying
  • Strong writing, oral communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills in English and Nepali, including ability to establish new contacts and maintain a network of relevant contacts
  • Willingness to spend about 25% of time in the field and willingness to travel to international events, if necessary
  • Ability to build support from staff across teams, and to build the capacity of others
  • Positive attitude with commitment to Save the Children's mission and values

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Desirable)

  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Social and/or Behavior Change Communication (BCC), advocacy, mass media communications, health systems strengthening, etc.
  • Previous working experience in Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH)
  • Knowledge of Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) policies and programs, especially those related to Newborn health
  • Experience working in advocacy and/or communications with different demographics, including rural populations, minority groups, and/or high-level officials

Job Description

Role Purpose

The Knowledge Management (KM) & Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for implementing and regularly reviewing the KM and advocacy strategy for Saving Newborn Lives (SNL) III in Nepal in coordination with SNL/Save the Children staff in Nepal and the project staff in Washington, DC. S/he will identify, document, package, catalogue, and disseminate information & knowledge generated through SNL including successful interventions, challenges, failures, lessons learned and best practices with the support from communications teams and in collaboration with the Every One Campaign when appropriate. The position holder will support the team in messaging to advocate with external partners and policy makers for improved newborn health practices. S/he will also develop communications strategies for newborn health activities as needed, in close coordination with members of the SNL team globally.

Term and Location: Fixed term position till December 2017 based in Kathmandu

Key Areas of Accountability

  • Implement and regularly review the knowledge management strategy for SNL 3 in Nepal in coordination with SNL/Save the Children staff in Nepal and globally
  • Develop documentation and dissemination plans, communications strategies, document, package, catalogue and disseminate information & knowledge generated through SNL including successful interventions, challenges, lessons learned and best practices
  • Ensure that SNL is effectively reaching target audiences through audience-specific information, formats, and channels
  • Support messaging to advocate with external partners and policy makers for improved newborn health practices
  • Liaise with SNL’s staff in Washington, DC and with SNL’s KM network in other implementing countries to coordinate knowledge sharing efforts, communicate knowledge gathered in Nepal and disseminate knowledge gathered in other SNL III countries
  • Coordinate SNL and Save the Children Nepal (including the Every One Campaign) efforts to convene partners for knowledge sharing on newborn health
  • Ensure regular knowledge sharing and communications with identified champions; Incorporate champions into SNL advocacy strategy
  • Coordinate SNL efforts to engage the media and monitor their coverage of newborn health issues.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing meetings, teleconferences, field visits from other countries, delegations, and online forums and implement other knowledge management tools as needed
  • Liaise with Health & Nutrition team, Media and Communication team, Every One Campaign team and other relevant departments in Save the Children, the government and other SNL III partner organizations as needed to further knowledge sharing, communications and advocacy goals
  • Build capacity among SNL and Save the Children staff for KM, communications and advocacy
  • Work in close coordination with Behavior Change Communication (BCC) coordinator to generate and disseminate case stories and other relevant information related to MNCH in the field
  • Ensure regular contributions from Nepal to the Healthy Newborn Network (a global newborn health information website) and to the SNL newsletter
  • Lead development of a plan to institutionalize KM in Nepal so that knowledge sharing continues after the close of SNL
  • Assist the SNL team with program management tasks, including annual work plans and quarterly reports, ensuring the advocacy, communications, and KM are accurately reflected
